IRS still has a backlog of 10.2 million unprocessed tax returns. What can you do?

Despite making progress in cutting its backlog, the Internal Revenue Service still facing more than 10 million unprocessed returns, and its correspondent refunds.

As of July 29, the agency had 10.2 million unprocessed individual tax year 2021 returns. Of these, 1.8 million required correction of errors or other special handling and 8.4 million are paper returns waiting to be reviewed and processed. These 8.4 million are counted but not registered so, the tax payer has no way to find out if the IRS has received or not. The IRS keeps reminding that to resend again the return will only bring confusion and more delays, so the IRS strongly ask to wait a few more weeks to get updated.

In these cases, taxpayers can expect it to take as long as 6 months to receive their refund.

Waiting on a refund?

What should you do if you’re one of the ones still waiting for a return to be processed and a refund to be delivered?

The IRS suggests taxpayers check the “Where’s My Refund?” via IRS2Go app if their refund is delayed. The IRS confirmed some tax returns will be delayed if they are filed by paper, but here are the many other reasons your refund may be delayed, including:

  • Needs a correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount
  • Needs a correction to the Child Tax Credit amount
  • Is incomplete
  • Is affected by identity theft or fraud
  • Includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit using 2019 income.
  • Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, which could take up to 14 weeks to process
  • Needs further review in general

If the website doesn’t answer your questions, you can try and call the IRS but that can be a challenge. The agency said you should only call if:

  • It’s been 21 days or more since you e-filed
  • It’s been more than 6 months since you mailed your paper return
  • Where’s My Refund says we can provide more information to you over the phone.
